The guy is a massive hypocrite, or he is in deep denial. He rose up the ranks became Bishop, Archbishop, and finally Cardinal. 1966 became a Priest, 1997 Bishop, Archbishop 2001, Cardinal College 2003, 2014 became responsible for annual Vatican budget as Secretariat for the Economy.
This video shows him rising up the ranks and before the Royal Commission, He denied all charges and said Child Abuse is abhorrent to him(just like the Watchtower corporation spokes person J R Brown) :

If true I think data protection laws might be a factor as well as the preaching hours and bible studies are way down so they don't want a report anymore because it looks so bad on paper.
It also could be they are getting ready to make some big changes as those running the Watchtower corporation want stop trying to set dates and get out of the predicting the end of the world business because they suck so bad at it.

That doesn't mean, though, that one cannot show empathy for the injured person; nor does it mean it is wrong ("hypocritical") to do so. However, I am enough of a realist to know that from 12,000 miles away, there is little or nothing that I as an individual can do to help in this instance.
You have real clear thinking, I see that but I'm sure you can also see where someone who was a JW 2 decades ago, might be so removed from the cult that news of JW's being mistreated because of a ban might not really register any sympathy greater than lets save the whales in one's heart after watching the movie "Moby Dick". It all depends where one has been to determine where one is coming from.

I just want to say every human is a hypocrite when you really think about it,, it is just human nature, that is why when I hear hypocritical statements my ear don't perk up and focus it is a taken for granted kind of thing, so it don't have any negative association.
I enjoy Nate's way of bringing up subjects, so humorous and colorful. so enlighten us great teacher. I await thy holy hand grenade from Antioch.

I think perhaps that Watchtower Legal may be suffering from inflation due to it's belief that they are defending God's earthly organization. At least to the extent that they actually believe this should make them very vulnerable as it puts them in denial and unable to respond to reality, the blind leading the blind. I think all these lawsuits are a desperate attempt to do something to stop the flow of damaging information to the public. They desperately need a few wins in the court room to put some fear of Jehovah into apostates but it will not stop the flow of information because many are learning TTATT, and so the leaks should only multiply,, to enforce some type of transparency on these devious religious fanatics.

It has been my experience that those making the loudest accusations of hypocrisy are usually themselves some of the worst offenders.
They have a saying: "You spot it, you god it", sorta along the same line as Jung and his shadow projection theory.

It doesn't have that grating effect on me Nate, but a point well taken.
I appreciate the concern that is expressed for fair treatment of the poor duped JWs, something I wasn't really feeling at the time, so expressed an honest lack of concern,, boy did I draw heat from the moral thought police that disagreed. It was interesting but rather surprising to me that some would voice such indignation over a privately held but shared feeling. I know I can be a real jerk or be viewed as a real jerk sometimes and I'm perfectly okay with it.

I'm feeling in complete harmony with those that express blame for the Governing Body in bringing this type persecution on its members by the utter bull shit(extremist) they write. They need a persecution complex to survive so they keep writing this Listen, Obey us, and be Blessed(not disfellowshipped) malarkey which gotta draw heat from a more totalitarian form of government like Russia, and many others. And now to whip up the heat even more and cause more persecution they are naming Russia the King of the north in Daniel's prophesy. These guys are real self serving sickos.
I don't feel I'm defending Russia in my not censoring the government for human rights violations, just trying to look at the facts of why this tension exist with out all the moral judgements to wade thru.

"We have never lost a case against apostates.
I wouldn't say that,, let's never forget Olin Moyle:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olin_R._Moyle
Moyle was disfellowshipped by his congregation,[4] which wrote a letter to The Watchtower stating that they had not read Moyle's letter, but disapproved of his actions and "never listen to accusations against Brother Rutherford".[4][12] In 1940, Moyle sued the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania and the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York over the response in The Watchtower. Rutherford presented a public resolution at a 1941 convention against Moyle, with reference to the September 15, 1941 issue of The Watchtower.[13] Moyle won his suit, and the court awarded him $30,000 in damages, which was reduced to $15,000 on appeal in 1944.[14]
The initial jury verdict was affirmed twice on appeal; first by the five member Appellate Division, 2nd Department (3-2); and second, unanimously, by the seven members of the state's highest court, The Court of Appeals, in the capitol at Albany.[15]
